(HIDDEN) Letter of Reference

Attention: Please note that "Rethinking the Gilded Age and Progressivisms" requires one letter of reference.

While we understand that some NEH Summer Institutes do not require letters of reference, we value the special insights provided by referees and use the information they provide to help us select a strong and diverse mix of perspectives among our NEH Summer Scholars. If you have any problems securing the letters of recommendation in the timeframe required, please reach out to [email protected].

Reference Letters

Applicants are required to submit one letter of reference with their application. The two referees may be from inside or outside the applicant’s home institution. They should be familiar with the applicant's professional accomplishments or promise, teaching and/or research interests, and ability to contribute to and benefit from participation in the seminar or institute. Referees should be provided with the director's description of the seminar or institute and the applicant's essay. Referees should submit letters directly to [email protected] (if submitting electronically) or sign across the seal on the back of the envelope containing the letter (if submitting a hard copy). References are kept confidential by the selection committee.

Two letters of recommendation must be received by March 1, 2019. Your referee should email the project director directly at [email protected] (Subject line: NEH Institute Reference for [your name])

IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION BY POSTAL MAIL
You may choose to enclose hard copies of the letters of recommendation along with the application package you submit (postmark deadline: Wednesday, March 1, 2017). If you choose to submit hard copies, please include them with your application package. Referees should sign across the seal on the back of the envelope containing the letter. Alternately, the letters may be emailed from the referee directly to the project director at [email protected].
